Le Mars Connection in Tonight’s Little League World Series

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The 2019 Little League World Series opened Thursday in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.  However, rain washed out three of the four games scheduled for opening day.  The game involving the team from Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Bowling Green, Kentucky was one of the games rained out.  They’ll now play at 12-noon (CDT) Friday, weather permitting.  Heavy rain is forecast for Friday in Williamsport.

There is some local interest in the team from Coon Rapids Andover.  Their second baseman, Maddy Freking, pictured above, is the daughter of Le Mars graduate Richard Freking, who was a multi-sports athlete at Le Mars Community in the early ’90s.  Maddy helped her team defeat the team from Johnston, Iowa last weekend in the Midwest Regional finals, starting a key double play to escape a base-loaded, no out situation when her team was trailing by four runs.  Maddy took a line drive and alertly fired to her third baseman to double up a runner at third.  The play has been all over Face Book this week and was featured on ESPN’s broadcasts.  Maddy will be the 19th girl to ever play in the Little League Baseball World Series and the only one playing this week in the boys tournament.  KLEM sports director Denny Callahan spoke with Rich Freking about Maddy’s ‘BIG PLAY’ last weekend.
