Update – Fatal Accident near Remsen

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s office has released further information on the fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 140 near Remsen, Iowa. Israel Blancarte Verastegul, 68 of Worthington, Minnesota was killed in the crash. Verastegul was driving a blue 2003 Dodge Intrepid, traveling north on State Highway 140 and failed to yield at the stop sign. A passender in the Intrepid, Jose Everardo Cutino Ramirez, 34 of Worthington sustained minor injuries. The northbound vehicle collided with an east bound 2000 Chevy Venture van, driven by Jerry Lee Ashenfelter, 69, of Le Mars, Iowa. Ashenfelter sustained minor injuries. Both vehicles were a total loss.

One person was killed last evening in a motor vehicle crash east of Remsen around 5:46 p.m. The Plymouth County Sherrrif’s office reported a north bound passenger car failed to yield at a stop sign, and pulled into the path of an east bound minivan, at the intersection of Highway3 and Highway 140. Three people were taken to Floyd Valley Healthcare by Remsen ambulance. The accident remains under investigation by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s office and the Le Mars Police Department accident investigation team. Assisting at the scene were Remsen ambulance, fire and police, Kingsley police, Le Mars Police, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DOT motor vehicle enforcement and Iowa DOT maintenance.
