State Legislator Dr. Tom Jeneary Honors Denny Callahan

(Le Mars) — A special honor was bestowed upon former KLEM radio sport’s director, Denny Callahan on Wednesday morning. State House Representative Dr. Tom Jeneary of Le Mars presented Denny Callahan with a special recognition certificate from the Iowa House, as well as from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg. First, the recognition from the Iowa House of Representatives.

State Representative Jeneary also presented a certificate signed by Governor Kim Reynolds and by Lt. Governor Adam Gregg.

Jeneary explains why he wanted to have the honor of officially recognizing Denny Callahan for his broadcasting work of nearly 50 years.

The Le Mars state lawmaker says he wanted Governor Reynolds to also acknowledge Denny Callahan’s work. Jeneary has held on to the certificates since April. He says the honor also extends to Jeri Callahan, Denny’s wife, who has assisted at many of the ballgame broadcasts.

 

 

 

Iowa’s Unemployment Rate Inches Up to 3.9%

(Des Moines, IA) — The unemployment rate in Iowa inched up another tenth to three-point-nine percent in May. Employers in the state added 800 jobs last month. Iowa Workforce Development director Beth Townsend said” the positive
takeaways from May’s monthly job report are that the number of Iowans in the workforce increased by 63-hundred, the number of Iowans working increased by five thousand and claims numbers were down significantly from the previous month.” The number of unemployed Iowans increased by 13-hundred. The state’s
jobless rate was eight-point-three percent last May during the peak of the COVID pandemic.

 

 

 

Hail Storms Damage Crops in Northwest Iowa

(Le Mars, IA) — Storms packing hail hit several parts of the state Tuesday afternoon and did major crop damage to thousands of acres in northwest Iowa.
Le Mars area farmer Bill Tentinger says he has extensive damage to his corn, especially the rows that run east-west. Tentinger said, “a lot of that in the center of the storm is 100-percent wiped out. It’s sawed off clear down to the ground.” He says that corn was waist high. Photos from the area show hail covering the ground like a snowstorm. Tentinger says he may still try to re-
plant his soybean acres because it’s too late to replant the cornfields. The National Weather Service says the largest reported hail was in Linn County near Walker with half dollar-sized stones, while winds topped 66 miles-an-hour near Des Moines in Waukee.

 

 

 

Johnston Man Charged With Placing Explosive Device in Ankeny

(Ankeny, IA) — Police in Ankeny say a Johnston man is accused of placing an explosive device in a neighborhood earlier this month. Officers arrested 46-year-old Chad Allen Williams for possession and manufacture of an explosive device. A young girl found an explosive June 9th but wasn’t hurt. The A-T-F,
Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office and F-B-I are part of the investigation.

 

 

 

2nd Suspect Pleads Guilty in Fatal New Year’s Party Shooting in Sioux City

(Sioux City, IA) — A second suspect is pleading guilty to a deadly New Year’s party drive-by shooting in Sioux City. Twenty-year-old Christopher Morales entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and reckless use of a firearm in the shooting death 18-year-old Mia Kritis. A first-degree murder charged was dropped as part of a deal. Sioux City police said 27 shots were
fired into a home during a party where Kritis was killed and three others were wounded. Morales told the judge he fired his weapon nine or ten times and injured a couple people. Morales agreed to a 50-year sentence on the second-degree murder charge and another five years on the reckless use of firearms counts to be served consecutively. Anthony Bauer also pleaded guilty to
second-degree murder in the case.
