Carlin Comments On Grassley Deciding To Seek Re-election

(Sioux City) — Now that Republican U-S Senator Chuck Grassley has made it official that he intends to run again for re-election, that will set up a primary election between the 88-year old U-S Senator and Jim Carlin, the Republican from Sioux City who previously announced his intentions of running for Grassley’s seat.  Carlin says Grassley’s decision to run again, will only benefit his own campaign as he will be able to make the contrast between himself and Grassley.

Carlin says he doubts if any other Republican candidates will enter the race for U-S Senate. However, Carlin says he has heard from several Republicans who question Grassley’s age and his recent decisions on key votes.

Grassley is the oldest Republican in the Senate.  He has served in the U-S Senate since 1980.  Prior to his senate term, Grassley was a member of the U-S House of Representatives for six years, and before going to Washington, he served in the Iowa State legislature for 17 years.

Iowa State Patrol Releases Labor Day Weekend Traffic Statistics

(Spencer) –We are a few weeks past Labor Day and the long holiday weekend. The Iowa State Patrol has released its statistics associated with the three-day weekend.  Labor Day weekend traditionally is a deadly weekend with many traffic fatalities, and  Trooper Karey Yaneff says this last Labor Day holiday was no different.

Yaneff recites the traffic violation statistics from the Labor Day weekend.

Yaneff says each year the Iowa State Patrol along with the Iowa Department of Transportation sets an annual goal of no more than 300 traffic fatalities.  Unfortunately, in recent years, the number of total fatalities as a result of an accident far exceeds the goal of 300.

According to a website by the Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa has had already 244 traffic fatalities as of Friday.

Iowa AG’s Office Says Fatal Shooting of Suspect in Winnebago County Legally Justified

(Des Moines, IA)  —  The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says the fatal shooting of a suspect by a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy was entirely legally justified.  Deputy Justin Douglas shot and killed 48-year-old James Anderson on September 11th in Thompson.  Investigators say Anderson made a fake 9-1-1 call reporting an assault to lure officers to his apartment.  Anderson allegedly pointed a gun at Douglas and the deputy drew his firearm and negotiated with him.  Anderson later walked toward Deputy Douglas and raised his right hand with the gun.  That’s when Douglas fired one shot, hitting Anderson in the chest and he died at the scene.  Assistant Attorney General Scott Brown said the decision to shoot Anderson was reasonable and legally justified under the circumstances.

Iowa Latino Heritage Festival Returns to Des Moines

(Des Moines, IA)  —  The Iowa Latino Heritage Festival returns this weekend after being canceled in 2020 and enduring rain in 2019.  Executive director Joe Gonzalez says he’s glad the weather forecast looks good and this year there are even more sponsors to help make up for two years of lower earnings.  He says there are fewer exhibitors at this year’s festival and attributes that to some hesitation with the pandemic.  But, he says, that won’t take away from any of the fun and education.  Gonzalez says this time is going to be even a greater learning experience because of taking the time off.  And then also because “we’re, you know, a little bit smaller than usual.”  Tickets for Latino Heritage Festival this weekend in downtown Des Moines are five dollars.
