Update 9/11/23 – The driver of the vehicle who received fatal injuries was identified as Ryan S. Maier, 26, of Sioux City, Iowa. Assisting with the identification of the subject was the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux City Police Department, and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office.
Five vehicles were involved in an accident at the intersection of Highway 75 and C-60 around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. A gold Nissan driven by an unknown Caucasian male, traveling at a high rate of speed, sideswiped a blue SUV driven by Baylie Andersen of Jefferson, South Dakota, then a red Chevy Malibu driven by Evan Wielenga of Hull, Iowa. Both were stopped at a red light facing North. The Nissan then struck a grey 2015 GMC Yukon driven by Jeremy Ahlers of Remsen. The Nissan the stuck a 2008 Sierra driven by Pat Hoebelheinrich of Le Mars. The Nissan came to rest in the middle of the intersection. The driver of the Nissan was transported to Sioux City by Hinton ambulance, and was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center. Jamie Ahlers, a passenger in the Yukon, was transported to Orange City Health System by Merrill ambulance and sustained minor injuries. Four children in the Yukon were treated on the scene. The gold Nissan was reported stolen out of Sioux City earlier in the day, prior to the accident. The driver has not been identified. The accident is currently under investigation. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s office was assisted by Hinton Police, Hinton Fire, Merrill Fire, Plymouth County Conservation, Iowa DOT and Iowa State Patrol.
