Akron-Westfield Boys Golf makes return trip to the State Meet after a year off

After missing out on the state meet last season, the Akron-Westfield boys golf team would not be denied this year getting back to state for the second time in three years. The Westerners qualified after a third-place finish shooting a 325 at the district tournament at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars on Monday.

The Westerners with their four scoring golfers all finished within five strokes of each other showing the consistency they have as a team. Carter Wilken had the low score in the meet for Akron-Westfield with a 79. He says the guys do a good job of controlling their game and keeping things from getting out of hand.

That said, the Westerners are used to having more of their guys crack lower than 80 to get their team score even lower. Wilken says that would have been nice to see, but it is just nice to qualify and be moving on.

Wilken says the guys are hoping to shave some strokes down before getting to the state meet. He says their experience on tough courses like Willow Creek has prepared them well for what they will see in Ames.

Akron-Westfield is confident heading into the state meet. They are going to Ames on a business trip with one goal in mind. Wilken says that goal is to win the whole thing.

The state golf meet is at Ames Golf and Country Club and runs Monday and Tuesday, May 20 and 21.
