The Remsen St. Mary’s softball team ended their season in the state tournament for the fifth time in six seasons falling in their final elimination game by the score of 10-4 to St. Edmond on Wednesday afternoon.
This season has been an emotional one for the Hawks after all they have gone through this school year. Grace Galles never thought she would be back on the field again, and she says this was a perfect way to go out.
Josie Schwickerath is another senior concluding her career with the Hawks. She says this was a special run and one that the girls can be proud of.
Remsen St. Mary’s was gut-punched early by St. Edmond giving up six runs in the second inning. It was 7-1 after two, and it could have been easy to pack it up there. The Hawks did not and proceeded to score three runs in the third to cut the lead in half. Head coach Erika Bates says the toughness she has seen all season showed again.
The Hawks then shut the Gaels down in the bottom of the third and made great strides towards a comeback. Schwickerath says that gave the Hawks a lot of confidence.
Remsen St. Mary’s was able to slow down St. Edmond after a rough start due to a change in pitching. Schwickerath was given an opportunity to pitch and did not allow a run until her second relief inning. Coach Bates says Schwickerath did a great job of working hard so she was ready to go when her number was called.
Schwickerath says she knew that in a moment’s notice, her job was very simple in the circle.
Galles was the catcher for both pitchers throughout the season and says both were great to work with.
After the third inning, St. Edmond changed pitchers which through the Hawk offense for a loop. The Hawks did not have a baserunner through the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Coach Bates says a larger arsenal made things challenging for her hitters at the plate.
Galles still finished with a solid day going 1-3 with a double that helped in the production of three runs in the third inning. She says she was always looking for the one pitch that she could hit hard.
Remsen St. Mary’s concludes the season with a record of 25-6. Coach Bates says this was a special team that she was fortunate to coach.
Coach Bates says the leadership this senior class brought was unmatched by most.
That is due in large part to a senior class that is so close with each other. Galles says that comes from years of experience playing with each other.
This concludes Remsen St. Mary’s fifth state tournament trip in six seasons. Coach Bates says the Hawks have established themselves as a winning team, and that is expected to trickle down to the younger classes for years to come.
St. Edmond advances on in the state tournament bracket where they will be tasked with beating Clarksville twice to make the championship game.
