Remsen St. Mary’s Baseball uses early opportunities to defeat Gehlen Catholic

The Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team used an early lead to spark an 11-1, five-inning win over Gehlen Catholic at Vosburg Field in Granville on Monday night.

The game was played in Granville due to the field conditions in Le Mars at the Riverview Complex following the flooding of the Floyd River. After playing on the field on Friday and having it flood on Saturday, it was a quick change of home for the Jays who had to adapt to a different situation quickly. Gehlen Catholic head coach Loi Kraft says that led to the guys feeling a little off against the Hawks.

The big start for Remsen St. Mary’s came from a four-run first inning helped by four free passes from Gehlen pitchers. The Hawks would work a total of 11 free passes split between eight walks and three hit batters. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Dean Harpenau says the guys have taken a very patient approach at the plate this season.

Gehlen Catholic head coach Loi Kraft says when you give a team like the Hawks so many chances, they are going to take advantage of them sooner rather than later.

Once the Hawks had built a comfortable lead, they were able to start swinging the bat a little more. Once they did, they recorded eight hits with four of them going for extra bases. Coach Harpenau says the guys do not look for extra bases, but they simply seek for good quality at-bats every time they are at the plate.

The Jays fell to 9-10 on the season following the loss. Coach Kraft knows this week and the rest of the season will be challenging on his guys. He says he needs the guys to show a growth in mental toughness as the season goes on.

Remsen St. Mary’s only has three more games on their regular season schedule before turning their attention to being the top seed in their district. Coach Harpenau says they are trying to keep the guys in tune with the rest of the season by treating their end-of-season games like early tournament games.

The Hawks moved to 16-3 on the season with the win.
