Gehlen Catholic’s softball season came to an end on Wednesday night with a 4-1 road loss against Woodbury Central.
The start of the game doomed Gehlen Catholic ultimately. Woodbury Central got a run in the first inning and two runs in the second while Gehlen Catholic could only reach with two walks in the first four innings. Head coach Tony Kerkvliet says it was just tough for the Jays to make the contact necessary to get on base.
The game stayed at a 3-0 score for a while until Woodbury Central put another run up in the fifth inning. Gehlen Catholic went in the seventh inning down 4-0, scored a run, and put themselves in a scenario that had the tying run in senior Larissa Pohlen at the plate. Coach Kerkvliet says the girls never gave up all the way to the end.
The seniors graduating the Gehlen Catholic program are Larissa Pohlen, Aspen Mosher, and Nevaeh Hodgson. Coach Kerkvliet says their leadership both on and off the field helped the program be what it was this season.
The Jays end the season with a record of 14-10 improving last year’s win total by an impressive eight games. That big jump sparked some life back into the program that Coach Kerkvliet is confident will carry into next season.
Woodbury Central will move on to face off with either Remsen St. Mary’s or G-T/R-A in the regional semifinal round on Friday night at 7:00 PM.
