No. 4 Hinton girls basketball keeps unbeaten season on track with win over Gehlen Catholic

The fourth-ranked Hinton girls basketball team remained undefeated with a big War Eagle Conference win over Gehlen Catholic by the score of 67-22.

The final score suggested that the game was never close, but the Jays were keeping it close for the first quarter. Gehlen Catholic was within one possession for a good portion of the first. Gehlen head coach Brandon Schaecher says the girls were more aggressive in that quarter than they were the rest of the game.

As the game progressed, Hinton’s defense got better and better as well. They allowed just 10 Gehlen Catholic points in the final three quarters. Hinton head coach Matt Leary says that was thanks in large part to some great defense in the post from Raelyn Kempema.

The Blackhawk defense turned into offense quickly throughout the night thanks to Sydney Doeschot. She finished with 28 points on 14 made baskets for the game. Coach Leary says her scoring ability is second to none.

Gehlen Catholic drops to 6-9 on the season and 1-4 in the War Eagle Conference after playing back-to-back games to start the week. The Jays are off for the rest of the week, and coach Schaecher says his team needs to reset before a final push to the finish.

Hinton improved to 14-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference action. The Blackhawks could easily look ahead to a matchup with No. 5 Cherokee on Monday and look past H-M-S on Friday. Coach Leary says that is now how his team has gotten to 14-0, and they will not be doing that this time either.

Hinton takes on H-M-S on Friday in Hinton. Gehlen Catholic will head to Moville to take on Woodbury Central this coming Monday.
