Keira Hessenius signs to wrestle at Iowa Lakes Community College

Le Mars Community senior Keira Hessenius signed the dotted line to solidify her college plans of wrestling at Iowa Lakes Community College next season.

Hessenius has been wrestling long before girls wrestling was a sanctioned sport. She says all of the time she has put into the sport from an early age has culminated to this decision.

The sport of wrestling runs through the blood of the Hessenius family male or female, so there was no surprise what sport would steal Keira Hessenius’ heart. She says the family around the sport has made it the one for her.

Many factors played into the decision to wrestle for Iowa Lakes. Keira’s older sister Kylie is on the team already and has told her about the program. Hessenius says that plus a great relationship with the coach made the decision easy.

Le Mars head coach Greer Milledge says a moment like this continues to show the progress and growth the sport is making.

With that continued growth, there are more girls to get excited about the sport. Hessenius hopes that this moment can continue to encourage girls to try it and maybe they can get this opportunity someday too.

The college game is a little different wrestling freestyle, but Coach Milledge says Hessenius’ game is actually built well for the college level.

The different style of wrestling and the different level of competition are what Hessenius is looking forward to most next year.

The Lakers recently picked up the program’s first ever dual win this season. They wrestle their home matches in Estherville.
