CLIVE, IA – The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) celebrated the dedication and
contributions of many Plymouth County leaders at the annual Iowa Pork Congress held in late January. The event recognized both individuals and county organizations for their efforts in promoting pork production and providing leadership in the industry.
State Belle Ringer Award Winner: Sterling Meyer
Sterling Meyer, who has served on the Plymouth County board for ten years, was honored with the state Belle Ringer award. The Belle Ringer Award recognizes and honors women in the pork industry who have gone above and beyond in helping promote and educate about pork. Sterling’s commitment to planning projects, promotional activities, and educating the community about the pork industry has significantly contributed to raising awareness and promoting the industry in Plymouth County.
Sterling has coordinated numerous projects, including serving as Banquet Coordinator, overseeing the Queen and Little Miss Pigtails contests, organizing various grilling events, and the Adopt a Pig school. Additionally, Sterling has been involved in the LifeSkills Quilt Auction, furthering her commitment to community engagement. One of Sterling’s most successful initiatives is the Plymouth County Tenderloin Trail, organized during National Pork Month. Sterling also organizes an informative and interactive display at the Plymouth County Round Barn during the county fair, enhancing pork education in the community. In addition to her local contributions, Sterling serves on the IPPA Youth Committee, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to the pork industry at the state level.
Hog Wild Award Nominee: Simon Kern
Simon Kern, a seven-year board member from Plymouth County, received the county Hog Wild award and was nominated for the state award. Kern’s involvement as Treasurer and his participation in various committees have been instrumental in planning educational programs and promotional events. His efforts have played a crucial role in supporting and promoting the pork industry in Plymouth County.
County Outreach Award Winner
The Plymouth County Pork Producers were also recognized for their outstanding promotional and educational efforts with the County Outreach award. The county organized the Plymouth County Tenderloin Trail, highlighting nine area restaurants and
their pork menu items. Patrons collected stamps in a passport by ordering pork dishes, with completed passports entered into a prize draw. This initiative encouraged consumers to explore new local eateries and menu options.
Additionally, the Plymouth County Pork Producers partnered with Jordan’s Meat Market to supply pork sticks for a backpack program benefiting school students. Every Friday, these backpacks, containing easy-to-eat, shelf-stable food, were sent home with students who might not have easy access to meals over the weekend. This collaboration resulted in the distribution of 4,050 pork sticks across several area schools, showcasing a strong community effort from production all the way to distribution within the county.
County Involvement Award Winner
Plymouth County was also the top county recognized for their active presence in their community through the County Involvement awards. The county’s efforts in promoting
the pork industry and creating unique promotional events earned them this prestigious recognition.
