Gehlen Catholic boys basketball drops district semifinal at South O’Brien

The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team ended their season on Thursday night with a district semifinal loss to South O’Brien by a score of 61-37.

Neither side could get much of a significant lead going in the first half with the Wolverines leading by three at the half. Gehlen Catholic head coach Ryan Wiltgen says the guys were playing some good defense to start the game.

In the second half, the Wolverines started putting the game away. Turnovers and offensive rebounds mounted into a 12-0 run in the third quarter that allowed South O’Brien to pull away for good. The Wolverines went on to outscore Gehlen 36-16 in the second half. Coach Wiltgen says pulling momentum away from South O’Brien is a tough thing to do.

The Jays finish the year at 14-9 after winning only nine games last season. It was an impressive turnaround with a starting lineup that did not feature a senior. Coach Wiltgen says this year’s group has gotten the program back on the right track.

Now, the task will be keeping the momentum going. Coach Wiltgen hopes a loss like this can motivate the guys to continue getting better in the offseason.

South O’Brien advances to the district final where they will take on Boyden-Hull in Sheldon.
