The Le Mars girls basketball team ended their season with a 79-29 region semifinal loss at top-ranked Bishop Heelan on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs unfortunately were no match for a Crusader team that was in a rhythm scoring 58 points in the first half. The Bulldogs did do a lot of good things in the second quarter scoring 15 of their 29 points in that frame. Head coach Sidney Baumgartner says the girls were able to figure out Heelan’s tough zone defense at times in that quarter.
Le Mars was down 58-21 at the half and no ability to come back with the running clock in effect. It ended the high school basketball careers of four Bulldogs who went through a lot to get through this season. Coach Baumgartner says she admired their willingness to stay with it, and their ability to lighten the mood at times.
The Bulldogs set a decent foundation for success with a lot of younger players earning valuable minutes all season. Coach Baumgartner says she is looking forward to their progression during the offseason.
Le Mars ends the season at 8-15. Bishop Heelan will play for a trip to the state tournament on Tuesday night against Lewis Central.
