MMCRU boys basketball falls short of state tournament ending historic season

The MMCRU boys basketball team had its historic season come to a close short of Des Moines on Saturday night. The No. 3 Royals lost their substate final with Boyden-Hull 53-34 in Sioux Center.

The name of the game was MMCRU’s inability to do what they wanted to do offensively. Boyden-Hull controlled the tempo for most of the game and kept a high-flying and high-scoring MMCRU offense in check. As a result, Boyden-Hull led MMCRU 17-2 after one quarter. Head coach Cam Kuchel says that deficit is hard to come back from against any team.

MMCRU did get straightened out a bit in the second quarter outscoring Boyden-Hull 11-4 to take just an eight-point deficit into the locker room. Coach Kuchel says the guys were able to cause chaos with the press, but it did not last much longer than the second period.

Boyden-Hull would continue to pull away holding MMCRU to just three points in the third quarter and crushing their hopes of a state tournament. The Royals finish a historic season with a record of 23-3 and graduate a senior class whose freshmen campaign ended at 7-15. Coach Kuchel says this group has taken the program to new heights.

Coach Kuchel says it is hard to quantify the improvement now, but he says the team did special things all season.

MMCRU ends the season with a record of 23-3. Boyden-Hull advances to the state tournament for the 20th time in school history. They will take on No. 2 Madrid in the first round of the state tournament.
