MMCRU boys golf advances to state meet for third-straight season

For the third year in a row, the MMCRU boys golf team qualified for the state tournament shooting a school-record 310 in Shenandoah and finishing second place in the district on Monday.

The road to the state tournament has been long for the Royals who had to travel nearly three hours for both their sectional and district meet. Add on a set of storms that impacted their travel on Sunday down to Shenandoah, and it is very impressive the Royals performed as well as they did. Head coach Mark Schuttler on what it took to get the boys down there to compete.

Because of the weather and graduation weekend, the Royals were not able to get a practice round on the course ahead of time. Coach Schuttler says he had to use some outside resources to prepare the guys for competition, but the course did remind them of some familiar layouts they have played on before.

In the team standings, the top eight teams were separated by 12 strokes. Second through fifth place were separated by three strokes. Coach Schuttler says the level of competition around the Royals upped their game as well.

The Royals now turn their attention to the state meet for the third year in a row. Coach Schuttler says the guys will be motivated after having a disappointing state meet last year.

The state golf tournament takes place on May 26 and 27 in Waterloo at South Hills Golf Course.
