The top-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team suffered a season-opening setback on Wednesday night with a 5-4 loss on the road at Newell-Fonda.
It was the first time the Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team had lost their season-opening game since 2016 when they opened the year with a loss to West Sioux. The Hawks fell behind early in this contest with Newell-Fonda getting three runs in the first inning. Head coach Dean Harpenau says everyone was off their game in some way.
The Hawks were able to turn around right away and tie the game back up with three runs in the top of the second thanks in part to a two-out, two-run double by Keaton Harpenau. Remsen St. Mary’s also took the lead with a run in the fourth, but they missed out on other opportunities to score as the game went along. Coach Harpenau says those things have to be cleaned up if the season is to progress positively.
The Hawks will take an 0-1 record into next week where the schedule does not get any easier. The Hawks will take on Hinton on the road, Akron-Westfield at home, and host three strong teams for the Marv Thelen Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Coach Harpenau says the guys need to come ready to play because they have a target on their back all season.
Remsen St. Mary’s next matchup is at Hinton on Wednesday, May 28.
