Hinton softball opens season with run-rule home win over Remsen St. Mary’s

The Hinton Blackhawk softball team opened the 2025 season with a convincing 9-1 five-inning victory over Remsen St. Mary’s at home on Wednesday night.

Hinton wasted no time dusting off the bats sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs in the first inning. They followed that up with another two runs in the second and did not look back from there. Hinton head coach Jennifer Jacobs-List says her team was eager to send a message early.

The Remsen St. Mary’s softball team is a brand-new group after graduating a lot of seniors from last year’s state tournament team. First-year Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Erika Bates says the team was nervous early, but they settled in as the game went along.

In the end, the Hawk hitters were no match for Kayla Sypersma. The junior allowed just three hits, one run, and struck out six in five innings to pick up her first win of the season. Coach Jacobs-List says Sypersma sometimes flies under the radar, but she is a great pitcher to work with.

Remsen St. Mary’s opens the season 0-1 and returns to action in the form of a back-to-back with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley on the road. Coach Bates says it will take some quick self-evaluation to figure out what to do better to have success.

The Blackhawks continue the season on Friday playing their first War Eagle Conference matchup of the year at West Sioux. Coach Jacobs-List says this win can not give her team a false sense of security early in the season.

Both of Hinton and Remsen St. Mary’s next contests start around 7:30 PM.
