Le Mars Community wrestling graduate Keira Hessenius will get a chance to represent Le Mars as a high schooler one final time in Florida next week. Hessenius has been chosen to compete with Team Iowa at the 2025 National Scholastic Duals which will take place June 26-28 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The Scholastic Duals take the best wrestlers from across the country to compete for a national championship in a dual bracket format. This is the second major dual tournament Hessenius has participated in this offseason. She says this one is one that she has been looking forward to competing in for a long time.
The opportunity came out of the blue for Hessenius who did not perform well enough at the state tournament that feeds into this national opportunity. She says she was very surprised when presented with the opportunity after all.
Hessenius’ last chance to wrestle as a high schooler for Le Mars is coming much later than it does for other wrestlers. It has been a blessing considering she thought her last chance to wrestle for Le Mars had passed after the state championship bout in February.
A trip like this for an opportunity like this is one that takes a ton of logistical planning. It also presents a big financial component to the opportunity as well. Hessenius encourages anyone who would like to help make this opportunity financially easier on her family to do so.
Hessenius leaves for Florida later this week. She will compete in Fort Lauderdale on June 26-28.
