Gehlen Catholic softball’s late comeback falls one-run short to West Sioux

The Gehlen Catholic softball team could not overcome a late West Sioux push in the sixth inning in a 6-5 loss in Ireton on Monday night.

Gehlen’s bats were slow out of the gates going the first four innings without a hit and only able to muster one run on the scoreboard. Gehlen Catholic head coach Tony Kerkvliet says his hitters had a tough time picking up the spin out of the hand.

The Jays were given chances to get back in the game thanks to some great pitching from Kennedy Paulson. Unfortunately, she could not do everything for the Jays and allowed a grand slam in the sixth inning that gave West Sioux the lead for good. Coach Kerkvliet says she pitched a really good game in spit of that late miscue.

Even after seeing a tie game turn into a four-run game with one swing, the Jays were not willing to give up. Gehlen scored three runs with their backs against the wall in the seventh and even put the tying run on third base with two outs. Coach Kerkvliet says the late fight from his team was great to see.

Gehlen Catholic falls below .500 on the season and is now 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the War Eagle Conference. Slow starts have unfortunately been the trend for the Jays lately. Coach Kerkvliet says the team has to do better early in games to set the tone.

Gehlen Catholic is next in action on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup at Western Christian.
