MMCRU baseball gets shutout by Gehlen Catholic in district final

In their second district championship game in three years, the MMCRU baseball team was shutout by Gehlen Catholic at home by the score of 5-0.

The score is a bit deceiving with Gehlen Catholic hitting two home runs to score their five runs in the victory. Outside of that, neither side could push across much of anything consistently. MMCRU head coach Cam Kuchel says that was a well-played and evenly-matched baseball game.

The two Gehlen home runs came within the first three innings meaning it could have sent the Royals spiraling through the middle innings. Coach Kuchel says he was happy that his pitching was able to lock things down when they needed to most.

The Royals graduated four seniors that helped post one of the better seasons in MMCRU baseball history. Coach Kuchel says all of them contributed heavily to a great year for the program.

The 18-4 record MMCRU posted by this year’s team is the best winning percentage for the school since the 2009 MMC Eagles went 22-3. Coach Kuchel says the returners need to continue working hard so that this season can be a stepping stone and not a destination.

Gehlen Catholic advances to a substate final where they will take on Remsen St. Mary’s in Cherokee on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM. You can listen to the game on KLEM.
