The Remsen St. Mary’s volleyball team won their second-straight five-set postseason matchup beating No. 15 Boyden-Hull 3-2 to secure a spot in the region final.
The Hawks jumped out on Boyden-Hull early with a 25-20 win in the first set. That win gave them a good springboard to play well the rest of the match. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Stacy Bunkers says it was also a good way to start when considering the adjusted strategy the Hawks were running due to some changes in the rotation.
That change saw the Hawks pick up the tempo a lot more within their offense which held the Comets in check at times. Coach Bunkers says the girls have responded well to all the changes that have been thrown at them.
Boyden-Hull went on to win the second set, and Remsen St. Mary’s took the third. As the match went along, the Hawks seemed to get better even if they did not win the fourth set. Coach Bunkers attributes that to having to grind out some longer matches throughout the regular season, and it prepared them well for the late points against Boyden-Hull.
The Hawks won the fifth set 16-14 to secure a spot as one of the last 16 teams standing in Class 1A. Their region final opponent is the eighth-ranked team in the state with the Cowgirls of Sidney on the docket. Coach Bunkers says taking care of the fundamentals will be critical toward picking up the win on Wednesday and securing the school’s first state tournament berth since 1984.
First serve is set for 7:00 PM on Wednesday in Mapleton at MVAOCOU High School.
