Gehlen Catholic boys basketball finishes first week of the season with third win

The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team picked up their third win of their first week of the season with a 57-19 victory over Akron-Westfield.

Those three wins have come in four games to start the season, and the Jays may be feeling the effects of the fatigue a big. That’s why head coach Eric Kellen says he put in a zone defense for the game with Akron-Westfield to give his guys a bit of a break at times.

That zone defense proved to be a struggle for the Westerners who, after scoring 11 points in the first quarter, scored eight points in the final three quarters. Head coach Steven Husk says his guys could not execute what they wanted to on that side of the ball.

Another side of the Gehlen victory came in the rebounding department where the Jays created second chances at every turn. The Jays created 18 offensive rebounds and outrebound the Westerners 50-25. Coach Kellen says everything about that was great up until putting the ball in the hoop.

The Westerners fall to 0-3 on the young season and have three games to get a win this upcoming week. Coach Husk says it takes a mental adjustment to get out of an early rut on the season.

Gehlen Catholic improves to 3-1 on the season with the win. Coach Kellen says the continued success is directly attributable to improvements and growth made on the offensive side this season.

Akron-Westfield is next in action on Monday against Kingsley-Pierson. Gehlen Catholic hosts Hinton for their next matchup on Tuesday night.
