The Hinton boys basketball team solidified a season sweep of Gehlen Catholic with a 51-46 victory in Hinton on Tuesday night.
Hinton was on the wrong end of the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter but got a big offensive spark from Logan Kempema to give them a nine-point lead into the half. Kempema finished with an impressive 29 of Hinton’s 51 points in the win. Hinton head coach John Spies says Kempema is someone that is integral to their offensive success.
As the second half went along, Gehlen Catholic had chances to come back in the game bringing it as close as four points in the second half. Head coach Eric Kellen says the comeback never ended up happening due to some ill-timed mistakes from his team.
The game was played very physically with a focus on the defensive side showing out. Coach Spies says that meant his guys had to value the basketball late in the game, and they did that.
Gehlen drops to 8-5 on the season and falls to 3-1 in War Eagle Conference play. Coach Kellen says this game taught his guys what they need to do to hang with physical teams late in the year.
The win keeps Hinton’s winning streak up to seven games improving their record to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the War Eagle Conference. Coach Spies says his team has done a good job of playing with a level head and moving on to the next game after wins.
Logan Kempema was joined in the scoring by Logan Coffee who had 16 points for Hinton. Gehlen Catholic’s topo scorers were Mason Small and Nolan Teel who scored 11 points each.
