Floyd Valley Healthcare demonstrates new da Vinci 5 surgical robot

Floyd Valley Healthcare patients will soon have the opportunity to have quality robotic-assisted surgeries in Le Mars, with the hospital having acquired the da Vinci 5 surgical robot.

The system was shown off to the public during a presentation on Friday by Dr. Brooke Konz, a general surgeon at Floyd Valley. Attendees were able to learn more about the system itself, what procedures will be available to use with the system, and ask questions to hospital staff and Intuitive Surgical, the system’s creators. Hands-on demonstrations were also available for guests to use.

Dustin Wright, CEO of Floyd Valley Healthcare, explained the advantages of the da Vinci 5 to KLEM.

Wright says that the system will eventually become the hospital’s “primary source” of surgical equipment.

At roughly $2.5 million per unit, Floyd Valley will become just the ninth hospital in Iowa to have the da Vinci 5. Wright stressed the importance of having quality surgical technology in Le Mars.

The first surgery with the new system is scheduled to take place on February 4th.

Third week of Beat the Blues Challenge focuses on socializing

The Le Mars Public Library is continuing their Beat the Blues Challenge, with this week’s challenge focused on the importance of socializing and friendships.

Everyone needs social connections to survive and thrive. According to the Mayo Clinic, good friends are good for your health. Friends can help you celebrate good times and support you during bad times, can help keep you from feeling alone, can raise your sense of connection, belonging, and purpose, help you cope through hard times, and urge you to change or avoid habits that aren’t healthy.

This week, the library is encouraging teens and adults to visit the library with a friend. During the week of January 26th, you can stop at the front desk with a friend to receive a complimentary hot drink (coffee, tea, hot chocolate) and do one of two activities. Mag & Gab, where you read magazines in the reading room and talk about them with a friend, and Puzzle Time, where you work on the library’s community puzzle with a friend.

Visit the Le Mars Public Library’s website for a list of more library activities you can attend this week with a friend. The Beat the Blues Challenge will run from now until March 6th.
