Iowa primary elections: Anderson wins Republican Primary bid in Board of Supervisors, Lahn carries in gubernatorial primary

Voters in Plymouth County and across the state headed to the polls yesterday to decide which candidates would contest local, state, and national offices in November’s general election.

In the local Board of Supervisors District 4 Republican primary, the only contested primary for the board, Craig Anderson won the Republican Party nomination with 1,360 votes to challenger Randy Kroksh’s 766 votes. Speaking to KLEM on primary night, Anderson thanked voters for supporting him in his bid for another four year term.

 

In statewide elections, Zach Lahn carried Plymouth County in the Iowa gubernatorial Republican primary with 44% of the vote, with congressman Randy Feenstra finishing with 42%. Ashley Hinson carried Plymouth County in the U.S. Senate Republican primary with 58% of the vote, while Josh Turek won Plymouth County in the Democratic primary with 76% of the vote. Chris McGowan ran unopposed in the Republican primary for Iowa’s 4th congressional district, while Dave Dawson won the Democratic primary in Plymouth County with 43% of the vote.

Omaha man charged with attempted murder pleads not guilty, trial date set

A Omaha, Nebraska man has pleaded not guilty to several charges, including attempted murder, after an incident in Plymouth County in April. 33-year-old Zakery Strong was taken into custody early last month and was charged with one count each of attempted murder, a class B felony, willful injury, a class C felony, assault in violation of individual rights, a class D felony, and assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.

The charges come after an incident that occurred on Wednesday, April 29th, when officers from the Le Mars Police Department were called to the emergency room at Floyd Valley Healthcare. Officers met and spoke to a witness and the victim of an assault that took place at a residence on 2nd Avenue SW in Le Mars. According to court documents, the victim had blood on his nose, inside of his mouth, and a torn left earlobe, as well as visible marks on his neck “where the victim stated Strong was ‘choking’ him out.”

The victim also alleged he was blacking out and losing consciousness, that Strong threatened to kill him, and that he and the witness felt Strong “was in such a rage that they felt the victim was going to die from the actions of Strong.”

Strong’s jury trial is currently scheduled to start on Tuesday, July 21st at 9am.

Traveling Freedom 250 mobile museum coming to Remsen, Kingsley

As part of celebrations honoring the United States’ 250th birthday, a museum celebrating American history will be making stops in Plymouth County as it travels the country. The Freedom 250 Mobile Museum will stop in Remsen and Kingsley this week, and Remsen Public Library director Janeene Klein told KLEM that the museum will provide a hands-on learning experience for attendees.

 

According to Freedom 250’s official website, the trucks will “bring the story of American independence to students, families, and citizens in every corner of our country.” Klein explained the process of bringing the truck to Remsen.

 

The Freedom Trucks will roll through Remsen tomorrow and Friday from 10am until 6pm at the Remsen City Hall, and in Kingsley on Sunday, June 7th and Monday, June 8th from 9:30am until 5pm. The Remsen Public Library will also host a free community luncheon honoring local veterans tomorrow at the library starting at 11am.
