The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team opened their postseason path with a district quarterfinal win over Remsen St. Mary’s by the score of 52-36.
Gehlen Catholic has been feeling under the weather as a team the last few days, and it showed in the first half. Head coach Eric Kellen says his guys did enough to create scoring opportunities, but they did not have enough to put them in the basket.
The missed scoring opportunities did not hurt the Jays much as they responded well on the defensive side. They put together a trap that had Remsen St. Mary’s struggling to take care of the basketball. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Justin Ruden says his team was not sticking to the gameplan to start the game.
The Jays were able to get some offense rolling their way in the second half, and a lot of it came from Dylan Lubben. He scored eight points in the third quarter and 14 points for the game. Coach Kellen says he was important to get going in the second half.
The loss for Remsen St. Mary’s puts them in a very unfamiliar spot. They have made it to at least the district final game in each of the last 10 years and the substate final in the last nine seasons in a row. Coach Ruden says having a young team showed this season, and he is hoping the guys learn from these opportunities.
Gehlen Catholic advances to the district semifinal with a 15-7 record. They will take on a solid Kingsley-Pierson team on Thursday night. Coach Kellen says getting healthy will be very important ahead of a very competitive game.
Tip-off between the Jays and Panthers is set for 7:00 PM on Thursday night. Coverage begins on KLEM Radio starting at 6:45 PM.
