Primary election results canvassed by Board of Supervisors
During the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, the Board formally canvassed the results from June 2nd’s primary elections.
No results were changed due to the canvass. According to Plymouth County Auditor Stacey Feldman, 3,127 total votes were cast in the primary, with 2,528 Republican primary voters casting a ballot out of roughly 9,500 registered Republicans in the county, and 599 Democratic primary votes cast out of over 2,600 registered Democrats in Plymouth County. Turnout was 26.4% for the Republican primary and 23% for the Democratic primary, with the election costing $27,736.61 for the county.
The focus for state and federal candidates will now shift towards November’s general election, with the county accepting absentee ballot request forms starting at the end of August.

Le Mars YMCA to hold Summer Dance Camp
The Le Mars Area YMCA will hold two Dance Camps this summer, with registration open for all age levels.
The first camp, “Saddle Up!,” will take place from Monday, June 22nd through Friday, June 26th, with the YMCA describing the camp as celebrating “country music and culture through dance, storytelling, and sparkle.” The second camp, “Emerald City Moves!,” will take place from Monday, July 20th through Friday, July 24th, with it being described as “an enchanting journey through the magical world of Wicked,” and “the perfect way to develop confidence, creativity, and performance skills.”

Sand-Muhlbauer ticket makes first public appearance
Democratic candidate for governor Rob Sand and his running mate Dave Muhlbauer made their first public appearance together Wednesday night. Sand says he picked Muhlbauer partly because of his consistency.
About 200 people attended the event in Manning, which is near Muhlbauer’s farm. Muhlbauer, who’s finishing up his second term as a county Supervisor, is the only elected Democrat in Crawford County. Muhlbauer’s nomination to be Iowa’s next lieutenant governor will be made official this Saturday by delegates at the Iowa Democratic Party’s state convention.
Republican nominee Zach Lahn has not revealed his choice for a running mate. (***UPDATE***: Lahn announced his selection of state representative Derek Wulf from Hudson as his running mate earlier this morning.) Republicans say leaked audio obtained by the Iowa Field Report blog shows Sand’s views behind closed doors are different from the unifying message Sand presents on the campaign trail. Sand suggested Republicans will have to take their medicine if he’s elected, because Republican lawmakers recently gave governors more power in selecting Iowa judges. Sand also said he’d like to reverse those changes and return the merit-based system to the way it was six years ago before Republicans began tinkering with it.
A constitutional amendment passed over 60 years ago calls for a commission to interview applicants for openings on the Iowa Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. The commission sends three nominees to the governor, who then appoints one of them. In 2019, Governor Reynolds signed a law that gave her and future governors authority to choose the majority of people who serve on that judicial nominating commission.
