The Gehlen Catholic softball team began its postseason push with a 9-1 win in six innings at Trinity Christian on Monday night.
After losing to the Tigers in the regular season, Gehlen Catholic was trying to avoid another loss in the postseason. Gehlen trailed 1-0 heading into the third inning when the bats woke up and started producing runs consistently. Head coach Tony Kerkvliet says he was pleased to see the offense get going late.
Gehlen’s offense put up one run in the third, two runs in the fourth, five runs in the fifth, and one more run in the sixth to put them on top. Coach Kerkvliet says it took a second time through the order for the offense to get their bearings.
The Jays were also the beneficiary of eight walks from Trinity Christian pitching. Being patient is not always the most exciting way to get on base, but it is very productive. Coach Kerkvliet says the Jays had to fight some urges to swing the bat and keep their patience in check.
With the win, the Jays improve to 14-10 on the season. They will next play in a regional quarterfinal against the No. 8 Newell-Fonda Mustangs on Wednesday night. Coach Kerkvliet knows that beating a team like Newell-Fonda will take a complete game start to finish from his team.
