For the fourth time in five seasons, the Hinton volleyball team will play at the state tournament in Coralville after defeating Central Lyon in straight sets on Wednesday night in Orange City.
The Blackhawks graduated a strong senior class last year that featured the state’s player of the year, their setter, and a tremendous blocker. Hinton co-head coach Robin Mohr says he was confident in the players coming back to keep the momentum from the last few years into this season.
The Blackhawks did not waste any time getting in front and staying front winning their sets by scores of 25-14, 25-12, and 25-14. Coach Mohr attributes that to some early aggressive serving that put the Lions on their back foot.
Hinton was also on fire on offense registering a .424 team kill efficiency. Coach Mohr attributes the high offensive efficiency to the great play in the back row.
After cruising through the first two sets, it could have been a point for Hinton to take a breather and rest on their big lead. Coach Mohr says the girls did a great job of playing hard and intense through the final point.
This has been a very consistent stretch of volleyball with Gehlen being a state tournament team nearly every season for half a decade. Coach Mohr credits the work ethic of the players for keeping the program near the top of the state.
The Blackhawks will enter the Class 2A State Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. Coach Mohr says that target will be big, and it requires some hard work to be done before the fact to have success.
Hinton will open their state tournament run on Tuesday, November 3 at 2:00 PM with a matchup against Hudson. KLEM Radio will have live coverage of the match with pregame coverage scheduled to begin at 1:45 PM.
