The Remsen St. Mary’s football team won their playoff opener in Remsen on Friday night defeating Boyer Valley 43-13.
Aside from all the energy of a playoff game, the Hawks were also fired up at the chance of getting to play at home for the first time since September 4. Head coach Tim Osterman says he could sense a different energy getting ready for the game.
The Hawks were able to play a steady brand of football that did not hinder their ability to do what they wanted to do. Penalties were limited, and the Hawks managed to avoid turnovers as well. Coach Osterman says that was a good recipe for a successful playoff win.
With the win being a factor, Remsen St. Mary’s was only able to complete two passes on six attempts. That did not matter much since the Hawks ran the ball 58 times for 313 yards and a rate of five-and-a-half yards per carry. Coach Osterman says the credit goes to the guys up front for making that happen.
The Hawks move on to the second round of the playoffs where they will take on No. 5 Bishop Garrigan in Algona on Friday night. Coach Osterman says being one dimensional will not work against the Golden Bears, and he wants his team to be able to throw the ball effectively as well.
Remsen St. Mary’s and Bishop Garrigan kick off at 7:00 PM on Friday night in Algona.
