The Remsen St. Mary’s softball team fell in six innings in their state tournament opener late on Monday night in Fort Dodge with an 8-0 loss to St. Edmond.
The Hawks and Gaels were pushed back over two-and-a-half hours off their start time due to a 15-inning game that was played prior to them. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Erika Bates says that wait made the girls very anxious after having to sit around and wait on pins and needles for an intense extra-inning game to wrap up.
Once the game got going, St. Edmond was ready to go offensively. The Gaels put up three runs in the first, three runs in the fourth, and two more in the sixth. Unfortunately, Remsen St. Mary’s could not match the intensity only recording two hits throughout the game. Coach Bates says St. Edmond’s pitcher was mixing up her stuff well which kept the Hawks off balance.
The Hawks were able to play some solid defense behind Neely Bacon, and that was led by right-fielder Sophia Harpenau. She had to make many running catches and even made some great throws to hold runners from advancing. Coach Bates says she could not have asked for more out of Harpenau in the field.
Remsen St. Mary’s falls to 24-5 and now faces an elimination game against North Butler who lost that 15-inning game that led into the Hawks’ game on Monday night. Coach Bates says this loss stings, but the girls have to have short memory with their season hanging in the balance.
