Helping Hands Donation and Thrift Store, Piece of Cake team up for back-to-school drive
Two local businesses are teaming up this month to help area students and families struggling with food insecurity with a back-to-school food drive. Jim Plueger, the owner of Helping Hands Donation and Thrift Store, told KLEM that their goal is to provide good nutritional meals for students in need.
Michelle Bomgaars, the owner of Piece of Cake downtown, says that the drive isn’t limited to food, and that they’re also looking for school supplies and personal hygiene products.
Starting now, anyone can stop at Piece of Cake or Helping Hands Donation and Thrift to donate items for the drive, with all items available for those in need. Bomgaars says gift cards and cash are also accepted.
The drive itself will run through Saturday, August 29th, but Plueger and Bomgaars says donations will be accepted past that date during regular business hours.

Plymouth County Historical Museum announces dates for 2026 Great Garage and Bake Sale
The Plymouth County Historical Museum has announced that its annual Great Garage and Bake Sale will take place from October 14th-18th.
One of the museum’s key fundraisers, proceeds from the sale will go towards supporting the preservation and operation of the museum and its exhibits. The sale will feature a wide selection of household goods, furniture, small appliances, and home decor, as well as a variety of homemade baked goods, including cookies, breads, bars, and pies. Community members are encouraged to stop by early for the best selection.
The museum is currently in need of donations of household goods, furniture, small appliances, and home decor for this year’s sale, with the museum saying that community support “makes a real difference, and early donations are especially appreciated.” Donations are being accepted now during regular museum hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 1-5pm.
The Great Garage and Bake Sale will be held in the “Old Central” gym at the Plymouth County Historical Museum in Le Mars from 5-7pm on Wednesday, October 14th, 1-3pm on Sunday, October 18th, and 10am-6pm all other days.

Sioux City neonatal intensive care unit gets new retinal cameras
The neonatal intensive care unit at Sioux City’s UnityPoint St. Luke’s hospital has expanded its vision care for infants with the addition of two retinal imaging cameras. Unit Nurse Manager Abby Laws says their Ophthalmologist Rich Walski recommended the cameras to help them diagnose, monitor and treat serious eye conditions.
Clinician Teresa Streeter says the new cameras give a much better picture of what’s happening.
They worked with the hospital foundation and local Lions clubs to get donations for the cameras and also got a 38-thousand dollar donation from Lions International. Steve Rehmann is the past district governor of the Northwest Iowa Lions clubs and says every one contributed to the project.
The hospital expects to use the equipment on the 100 babies who are born there each year.
