The Gehlen Catholic football team opened district play by improving to 2-0 with a 29-10 win over Sibley-Ocheyedan in Le Mars on Friday night.
The first half was a slog for the Gehlen offense to get going. Not much was going Gehlen’s way outside of the one touchdown they scored before halftime. Head coach Jeremy Schindler says everyone from the coaches to players was a bit flat to open the game.
In spite of the shaky start, the Jays finished the half on a higher note. After allowing a Sibley-Ocheyedan drive into the red zone, Gehlen had the fortitude to keep the Generals out of the end zone and hold them to three points. Coach Schindler says it was very important to close the half allowing just the field goal.
The second half turned the tables for good from the offensive side of the ball. The Jays scored 22-unanswered points behind some great offensive efficiency. Carson Schaecher finished the game completing 8-15 passes for 132 yards and three TDs. Coach Schindler says Schaecher’s performance offensively was very impactful.
Then on the defensive side, the Jays did not allow any more scoring the rest of the night. They even added their second defensive score of the season with Easton Spangler’s interception return for a touchdown. Coach Schindler says he was impressed with how the Jays executed on defense.
Gehlen Catholic improves to 2-0 overall and starts district play with a 1-0 record after the victory. The Jays will travel to take on Sioux Central who is on the opposite end of the spectrum falling to 0-2 overall and 0-1 to start district play. Coach Schindler says the record tells one thing, but it is very deceiving once you dive into the personnel.
