After going 13-0 and winning a state championship last season, the MMCRU football team has struggled in their encore season starting 0-2. They were able to break the zero on the win side of the ledger on Friday night with a 17-0 win at South O’Brien.
This season has been disappointing for the Royals who were anticipating having a target on their back all season. MMCRU head coach Colin Youde says it was great for the guys to get back in the win column.
The Royals were in a rut on the offensive side in their 0-2 start. MMCRU could only muster 20 points through their fist two games, and Coach Youde says it took some simplification to get the guys back on the right track.
Eli Harpenau was a focal point of the offense once again running for 88 yards and a score. Coach Youde says they are trying to make some of the decisions a little easier for Harpenau when he has the ball.
Luke Kintigh was a force on the defensive side recording 13.5 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble. Coach Youde says the gameplan on defense fit his style of play.
MMCRU is set to celebrate their homecoming this week with a district matchup against Sioux Center. Coach Youde says the message this week is that his guys better be ready to go on Friday night, otherwise the Rebels will expose them.
Kickoff between MMCRU and Sioux Central is set for 7:00 PM in Marcus. The Royals will also honor and recognize their 2025 state championship team during the game.
