Gravel Dump Truck Collides With SUV Injuring Two People

(Akron) — Two people are injured following a collision involving a gravel dump truck and a sports utility vehicle.  The accident happened Tuesday morning at about 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 3 and county road K-22, about ten miles west of Le Mars.  Iowa State Patrol trooper John Farley offers an account of what happened at the accident scene.

The Kia S-U-V had a Colorado license plate, although Farley says the female driver is a resident of Sioux City.  She has been identified as 59 year old Teresa Nelson. The dump truck was driven by 58 year old Randal Kruid of Hawarden. Kruid was hauling three-inch diameter rocks which spilled on the highway.  The Iowa Department of Transportation was called
in with snow plows to help push the spilled rocks into the ditch.  Northbound traffic on county road K-22 was stopped for nearly forty minutes while emergency crews were clearing the scene. Highway 3 was able to remain open.  Nelson is listed in critical condition, while Kruid is in serious, but stable condition.  Assisting at the scene were the Akron Fire Department, Akron Ambulance, Le Mars Ambulance, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Transportation and the Iowa State Patrol.
