Le Mars Students to attend Hawkeye Boys State

The Le Mars American Legion Wasmer Post 241 recently selected two young men from the community as representatives to the 2024 American Legion Hawkeye Boys State, which will be held June 23-28 at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

The representatives this year are Brock Hessenius (left, above) and Aaron Lee (right), both of Le Mars.  These young men are very involved in a wide variety of activities at the Le Mars Community High School and within the community.

They will be among more than 500 young men attending Boys State.  Boys State is a weeklong citizenship program sponsored by the Iowa Dept. of the American Legion.  Participants will experience firsthand the process of establishing/organizing city, county, and state governments.  A large variety of leadership activities take place each day, such as: Elect/Serve as City, County, and State Government Officials, Meeting Elected Officials at the Iowa Capital, National Guard Leadership Reaction Course, Band & Chorus Performances, Sports Tournaments, Black Hawk Helicopter Tours, Motivational Speaker Series, Iowa State Patrol Job Shadowing, Mock Court Trials/Judge Appointments, and Compete for up to $20,000 in College Scholarship Awards.

We congratulate Brock and Aaron on their selection to American Legion Boys State.
