Country Grain Elevators Busy While Harvest Winds Down

Grain hauling semi trailers line up at Craig to dump corn from this year’s harvest.

(Craig) — Farmers have been busy with the harvest, and the scene Saturday at the Farmer’s Cooperative Elevator at Craig, was perhaps no different than any other country grain elevator across the Midwest.  A continuous line of at least
ten semi trucks pulling fully loaded grain trailers with corn were stacked end-to-end waiting to cross the scales and dump their load of farmer’s gold.  When one semi truck would leave, another would arrive at the country grain elevator.
Doug Schurr, the general manager of the Craig cooperative grain elevator says despite the summer’s dry conditions, followed by the early autumn’s wet spell, the delivered corn has been of excellent quality.

Schurr says a majority of the corn brought to the elevator for storage or sale, has needed to be artificially dried.

The Craig Cooperative Elevator manager says area corn yields have been better than expected.

Schurr says the corn harvest, within his trade area, is showing signs of wrapping up for the season.

Schurr estimated that every ten minutes, ten thousand bushels of corn was delivered and dumped at the Craig elevator.  The manager at the Farmer’s Cooperative Elevator at Craig is concerned about adequate storage capacity,
having to set up an outdoor bunker to help store the grain.
