(Le Mars)  The excitement of Gehlen Catholic’s Homecoming continued Saturday when Samantha Zubrod, was selected for the NWIBA JH Honor Band.  The 7th Grade tuba player was selected to participate in the 52nd Annual Northwest Iowa Band Director’s Association (NWIBA) Junior High/Middle School Honor Bands Festival. The concert will be held at Schaeller Hall at 6 p.m. on November 9, 2019, at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

Sami, daughter of Dennis and Nancy Zubrod of Merrill, was one of over 350 7th and 8th grade band students from 41 Northwest Iowa schools who auditioned for a position in two honor bands. Approximately 190 students were chosen.

Sami began preparing for NWIBA Junior High Honor Band this past summer. She said, “I wanted to try honor band out and see if it was something I wanted to do again.”

Gehlen Catholic 5-12 Instrumental Music Director, Mr. Nathan Klaumann, is excited for Sami. He stated, “She worked extremely hard this fall to prepare for her audition. She went out and earned her spot in the NWIBA Junior High Honor Band.”

Guest conductors for the honor band festival will be Ms. Tiffany Wurth, Director of Bands, Buena Vista University, and Mr. Luiz Víquez, Assistant Professor of Clarinet and Director of Orchestras, the University of South Dakota.
