(LE MARS)–A family fundraiser is an annual event to benefit the Le Mars Area Dialysis services.
Nubs Gotto and family, friends and the Le Mars Eagles Club are sponsoring the third annual fund raiser. The event is Friday, August 20th at the Le Mars Eagles Club beginning at 5 p-m
They’ll serve grilled hamburgers, chips and more.
Freewill donations will be accepted with all proceeds to Le Mars Area Dialysis Services.
Sheldon send-off set for soldiers
(JOHNSTON)–Another community send-off ceremony is set for Iowa Army National Guard soldiers being activated in Afghanistan.
About 28-hundred members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Iowa Army National Guard, have been called up as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Selected members of the 2168th Transportation Company will have a send-off Saturday, July 24th at 1 p.m. at the Sheldon High School Football field. The Sheldon send-off is for about 70 soldiers.
The 2nd Brigade Combat team will train in Mississippi prior to leaving for Afghanistan.
More charges for burglaries from vehicles
(LE MARS)–Two more people have been charged following an investigation of numerous reports of items being taken from vehicles.
Le Mars Police say the items were taken in the last couple of months from vehicles that were not locked.
18-year-old Whitney Arnold of Le Mars is charged with possession of stolen property and is listed on the jail roster online.
Seventeen-year-old Austin Majeres of Le Mars faces five charges of burglary in the third degree. The charges were filed in juvenile court. He has been released to a parent.
Authorities say these charges are separate from those filed against four 15-year-olds reported earlier today on KLEM.
The investigation into car burglaries continues and more arrests are expected.
Identity theft arrest in Sioux County
(ORANGE CITY)–A Minnesota man is charged with felony identity theft in Sioux County.
The sheriff’s office released written information about the arrest of 28-year-old Salomon Carreto-Calderon of Worthington. Carretto-Calderon was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy for a traffic violation. Based on an investigation, authorities say he was using someone else’s identity to get a job at Golden Crisp in Sioux Center.
Carrreto-Calderon is charged with felony identity theft, driving without a license and failing to have insurance.
He is being held in the Sioux County Jail.
Fire destroys Beresford business
BERESFORD, S.D. (AP) Fire has destroyed a business in the southeast South Dakota town of Beresford.
Authorities say the blaze at Wall 2 Wall Beresford Carpet broke out about 6 p.m. Wednesday. The store with three employees was closed at the time.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.

Death of Norfolk bridge jumper ruled an accident
NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) Authorities say the death of a 42-year-old Norfolk man who jumped off a Norfolk bridge was accidental.
Madison County Attorney Joe Smith had said Tuesday that investigators didn’t suspect a crime in the death of Larry Dickey. Smith said Dickey likely died as a result of an accident and that an autopsy was being performed.
On Wednesday, he confirmed his earlier opinion: Dickey’s death was accidental.
Dickey’s body was found in the Elkhorn River on Monday. It was less than 100 yards from the First Street bridge.
A man was seen jumping from the bridge on Saturday evening. A search was conducted that night and Sunday.

Fire knocks out power in downtown Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Des Moines authorities say an underground fire has knocked out electrical power in part of the city’s business district.
Firefighters were working to put out the fire Thursday, which officials say was sparked by the failure of electrical equipment.
Officials of MidAmerican Energy say as soon as the fire is out they will move in a team to assess the damage and start repairs.
Authorities say the Hotel Fort Des Moines, the Hubbell building, some Wells Fargo offices, Allied offices and the Financial Center building have lost power. Some of the buildings have switched to backup generators.
Traffic signals are also being affected by the outage.
MidAmerican said it’s not likely that power can be restored before noon.
No injuries reported in home explosion
AMANA, Iowa (AP) A warning from a passer-by gave an Amana resident time to leave his home before the structure was destroyed by an explosion and fire.
Linda McDowell says she was driving with her grandchild through the neighborhood early Thursday when she noticed flames in the garage of the home.
David Ramsey says he was in the living room when McDowell pounded on this door. Ramsey says he ran outside and opened the garage door. An explosion blew him backward, and the fire spread to the rest of the house.
Ramsey says the fire may have started in the area of the garage where he stored gasoline and some lawn mowers.
Ramsey says he was singed in the fire, but is otherwise uninjured.
2 boys die after being found in Pella pool
PELLA, Iowa (AP) Organizers of a sports camp say two boys found at the bottom of a pool in Pella have died.
The boys were found in the pool at the Pella Aquatic Center shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The boys were attending a sports camp at Central College organized by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The organization says in a statement Thursday that the teens, ages 14 and 15, were from the Kansas City area. They were taken to a Pella hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The boys’ names were not immediately released. Autopsies are pending.
The organization says the boys were spending the evening at the pool with others attending the camp, and that there were at least 10 lifeguards and 20 group leaders on site.
Pella police are investigating.
Culver, Branstad dustup over stem cells
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is bashing Republican gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad on the issue of stem cell research.
During a visit to the Quad-Cities area Wednesday, Culver called stem cell research a key tool into some of the most debilitating diseases. He later said Branstad “does not believe in that kind of research.”
Culver told about three dozen people at a voter education forum sponsored by Genesis Health System that he wants to move forward, not backward.
Iowa lifted the ban on embryonic stem cell research in 2007. Culver accused Branstad of wanting to put the ban back in place.
That assertion is being disputed by Branstad’s spokesman Tim Albrecht, who accuses the Democrat of fear mongering. Albrecht said Branstad supports adult stem cell research, where he says the “real promise” lies.
