(DES MOINES) — Senior Tanner Kockler perservered through a 184-pitch, ten-walk day to pitch Remsen St. Mary’s into the 1A State title game at the State baseball tournament in Des Moines Thursday. The Hawks rallied from an early 7-1 deficit to beat the defending 1A State champion Mason Newman Knights in the semifinals 9-8. St. Mary’s scored four runs in the third and added four more in the bottom of the sixth inning for an improbable comeback. Matt Arens capped a two-hit, two RBI day with a game-tying single in the sixth and the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch. Kockler then battled out of one more jam in the top of the seventh to nail down the victory. Newman stranded 16 base runners in the game. Kockler scattered nine hits and struck out seven to improve to 11-and-3 for the season. Remsen St. Mary’s will seek their fourth State title in the school’s history Saturday at noon against number-one rated Martensdale-St. Mary’s (42-0). (DES MOINES) — Ethan Westphal tamed the Remsen St. Mary’s bats Saturday, holding the Hawks to six hits while striking out ten in a 3-0 shutout win for top-rated Martensdale-St. Mary’s in the 1A State championship game at Principal Park in Des Moines. The Blue Devils won their second title in the school’s history and became the ninth team in state history to cap an unbeaten season with a state championship. Martensdale-St. Mary’s went 43-and-0. All three runs were scored in the first inning. Hayden Van Hoose walked with the bases-loaded and then Zeb Noel drilled a two-run double down the left field line. Andrew Portz survived the shakey beginning to pitch into the seventh inning before Matt Arens got the final two outs to shut down a seventh inning threat by Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The Hawks best scoring chance came in the fourth when Mike Wesselmann and Tanner Kockler led off with singles. Clean-up hitter Beau Pick was then called out on strikes on a 3-2 pitch that seemed to be ball four. But halfway down the first base line the home plate umpire called the pitch a strike. By then the two base runners had started to advance to the next base on what was thought to be a base-on-balls. Wesselmann was thrown out at third base for a stike’em out-throw ’em out double play. Certainly a key moment in the game! Especially when the next two batters, Andrew Portz and Zane Phillips, reached base on a single and a walk to load the bases with two outs. The next batter struck out to end the threat. Remsen St. Mary’s had runners on first and third in the bottom of the seventh inning when the game ended. Remsen St. Mary’s finished the season with a 26-and-9 record and a runner-up trophy.
