SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) The PGA Championship gets under way today at Whistling Straights in Wisconsin with Tiger Woods still trying to get in the win column for 2010. Woods is coming off a horrible showing last weekend at the Bridgestone Invitational, where he finished 18-over par and beat just one player in the 80-man field. Woods tees off at 9:20 a.m. (EDT) along with defending champion Y.E. Yang and Vijay Singh (sing).

NEW YORK (AP) Police say Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez was charged with third-degree assault late Wednesday night after scuffling with his father-in-law at Citi Field. Rodriguez was arrested and being held at the ballpark early Thursday. His father-in-law was hospitalized with a scrape on his face and a bump on his head.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has been cleared to start hitting, six weeks after surgery on his right thumb and the club says it’s sticking to its original timetable for Utley’s return. Utley tore a ligament in his thumb sliding into second base in a game at Cincinnati on June 28 and was expected to miss at least eight weeks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Starting next year, the aluminum bats used by California’s high school baseball teams will have to meet new safety standards. The changes announced Wednesday came after a 16-year-old pitcher from Marin (muh-RIHN’) County suffered a major head injury when he was hit in the head last March by a line drive off a metal bat.

WEMBLEY, England (AP) It appears David Beckham’s international career is over after England coach Fabio Capello said Wednesday the former captain is too old to play for the national team — without notifying him first. Capello said the 35-year-old midfielder will have the chance to play in a friendly “farewell game” but will not be part of England’s team in qualifying for the 2012 European Championship.
