SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Starting next year, the aluminum bats used by California’s high school baseball teams will have to meet new safety standards. The changes announced Wednesday came after a 16-year-old pitcher from Marin (muh-RIHN’) County suffered a major head injury when he was hit in the head last March by a line drive off a metal bat.
WEMBLEY, England (AP) It appears David Beckham’s international career is over after England coach Fabio Capello said Wednesday the former captain is too old to play for the national team — without notifying him first. Capello said the 35-year-old midfielder will have the chance to play in a friendly “farewell game” but will not be part of England’s team in qualifying for the 2012 European Championship.
