ISU Sociologist Says Political Advertising Has Effect On Emotions
(Ames) — With countless political ads either heard on the radio or seen on television, is it any wonder to know the public may grow tired of the constant political bashing? However, an Iowa State University Sociology professor says regardless of what we think about political ads, they do have an impact upon how we view the candidates. Stephen Sapp says the political ads are created to stir up emotions. He says the creators of the ads are skilled at the “psycology of outrage”.

Sapp says for some people they may get tired of the negative ads, and it may produce a backlash effect taking away the incentive to participate in the political voting process, but yet, he contends those negative ads still help form our opinion.

Each candidate wants votes, but they also seek endorsements. Sapp says an endorsement from a respected entity can indeed help sway a voter’s opinion.

Hatch Again Advertising On Television
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Democratic candidate for governor Jack Hatch is back on television with a new ad.
Hatch stopped airing television advertising in late September. Campaign spokesman John Hedgecoth says Monday that a new ad, titled “Fresh Start,” will run through Nov. 3 on Des Moines and Cedar Rapids television stations. He could not immediately say how much the campaign was spending on the ad buy.
Gov. Terry Branstad has held a sizable lead throughout the race, with more money and support than Hatch.
The latest campaign finance reports show Branstad raised $1.3 million between July 15 and Oct. 14 and had $1.3 million left in cash. Hatch raised nearly $880,000 and had about $280,000 on hand. Hatch and his wife have loaned $140,000 to his campaign.
Osceloa Business Destroyed By Fire
OSCEOLA, Iowa (AP) – A fire has destroyed the Osceola Farm and Home, a 42-year-old business that drew people from the surrounding area.
Des Moines television station KCCI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1v4YSaB ) that officials are still investigating what caused the early morning Sunday blaze.
Store manager Dennis McMurry says he thinks the fire quickly spread, engulfing the store in thick, black clouds of smoke, because of paint, kerosene, oil and motor oil inside it.
McMurry watched the building burn down. He says it’s hard to believe that all that remains of the business are metal scraps.
Police Chief Marty Duffus says firefighters opted not to battle the fire from inside of the store because of melting steel. They instead used ladder towers to fight the blaze from outside.
