Sioux City Police Arrest Suspect In Great Southern Bank Robbery
(Sioux City) — Sioux City Police have arrested 22 year old Jonathan Birdnecklace of Sioux City as a suspect they believe may have been responsible for robbing the Great Southern Bank earlier Thursday morning. At about 9:00 a.m. a single suspect entered the bank taking an undetermined amount of cash. No weapon was seen and the suspect was seen walking northbound on foot from the bank. Birdnecklace was charged with one count of Robbery in the second degree. Cash stolen from the bank was recovered in his possession. The bank has been secured by officers and detectives investigating the incident. Police officers were able to pick up Birdnecklace as a suspect on the near northside area shortly after the robbery.
Alta Man Arrested For Selling Fraudulent Gold Bars
(Storm Lake) — Buena Vista authorities have arrested an Alta man for selling fradulent gold bars. Two weeks ago, the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to Peterson Jewelry of Alta, in reference to a subject selling fraudulent one ounce gold bars. Peterson Jewelry purchased one of the fraudulent bars from the subject, and later found it was not solid gold. After further investigation, a search warrant was issued for 301 Buenas Vista Street, apartment number 3 in Alta. While executing the search warrant, deputies found numerous fraudulent gold bars and drug paraphernalia at the residence. Also during the investigation, it was discovered the subject who was identified as Casey J. Paprocki, age 22, of Alta was selling fraudulent gold bars on eBay computer auction site advertising them as solid gold bars on eBay to a subject in Lebanon, Pennslyvania. The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office is also working with authorities in Pennslyvania in reference to the fraudulent sale. The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s office arrested Paprocki for theft in the second degree which is a Class D felony. This incident is still under investigation and more charges are expected.
Family Dispute Ends Up With Assault Charges
(Storm Lake) — A family dispute in Storm Lake on Wednesday evening ended with three adults jailed and two officers being assaulted. Storm Lake Police officers responded to the 600 block of Superior Street, shortly before 11:00 p.m. when Shaquirial Kiyannah Jordan, age 21, had kicked in an apartment door and assaulted her grandmother. Jordan, from Chicago, was charged with assault, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and criminal mischief. During the investigation, Delores Rankins, age 54, of Storm Lake became upset and assaulted a police officer. She was charged with assault on a peace officer causing bodily injury, disorderly conduct, and interference with officials acts. Her nephew, Daniel Rankins, age 32, of Alta also was arrested for assaulting an officer as well as for disorderly conduct, and interference with official acts. During the incident one officer suffered a cut on his arm and another was kicked in the head. Storm Lake Police Chief Mark Prosser says neither officer required medical attention and both were immediately able to return to duty.
Hichhiker Arrested For Possession Of Controlled Substance
(Le Mars) — On Tuesday evening, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office came in contact with an individual that was attempting two solicit a ride while walking on the wrong side of Highway 75 south of Highway 3. The individual was identified as Randy James Newcomb, age 47 of Spencer, IA. As a result of the encounter, Newcomb was found to be under the influence of a controlled substance. He was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Plymouth County Jail for Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd Offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Public Intoxication 3rd of Subsequent Offense.
Chamber Holiday Dollars Go On Sale Saturday
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce wants to remind area residents that the Chamber Holiday Dollars will go on sale this coming Saturday, November 1st in the Lower Level of the Le Mars Convention Center. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. a total of $204,000 will be sold in three different categories. People can save up to 10 percent on the Fareway, Hy-Vee, and Wal-mart dollars, and a savings of 15 percent for the retail and restaurant categories. Scott Pagler is a member of the Chamber Promotions Committee. He says the program was established a few years back to encourage shoppers to buy locally.

Pagler says this year’s amount of $204,000 is the most offered since the program started. He says local businesses and banks were willing to contribute more money to help with consumer savings.

The Hardware Hank business owner says the program has indeed been successful. He has heard of many people tell local business owners how they have used their allocation of holiday dollars.

Holiday dollars will be sold in $100 increments. Pagler says only cash or local checks will only be accepted, no debit or credit cards. He says there are three grocery or supermarkets and a total of 16 retail businesses and 10 restaurants and/or fast food establishments that are participating in this year’s holiday dollar campaign.

New Wednesday Hours For City Leaf Disposal Site
(Le Mars) — Le Mars City officials have announced that due to daylight savings time ending this weekend the city leaf & grass site will be adjusting the Wednesday hours. Effective Wednesday, November 5th, the site will be open from 1:00 until 5:00 instead of 2:00 to 6:00. Saturday hours will remain the same from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The city will keep the site open in November for as long as weather permits.
Citigroup Lays Off Employees
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Citigroup says it plans to lay off 370 employees in the Des Moines area by the middle of next year.
The company tells the Des Moines Register the decision came from “ongoing efforts” to increase efficiency of its operations.
Affected employees come from the company’s consumer banking business section. They represent more than two-thirds of Citigroup’s workforce in the Des Moines area.
Employees were told of the layoffs last week.
GOP Officials Ask County Election Officials About Election Night Recounts
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – With Election Day just around the corner in the competitive Iowa Senate race, Republicans are requesting information from state and local voting officials about polling places, voting rules and recount procedures.
The GOP says it just wants to be prepared in case there is any question about the outcome between Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Bruce Braley. The National Republican Senatorial Committee recently requested materials from the Iowa secretary of state’s office and the Ernst campaign has reached out to county auditors, seeking information.
The NRSC has made similar requests to secretary of state offices in 10 other states with tight Senate races.
Democrats have not made such extensive record requests of Iowa officials. They say they are focused on winning, but will be ready for a recount situation.
Kum And Go Convenience Stores To Comply With Disabilities Act
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Kum and Go convenience store chain will spend millions of dollars to make changes at more than 400 stores in 11 states to settle a lawsuit that claimed its gas stations failed to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
A Clinton, Iowa, man who uses a wheelchair filed the class-action lawsuit in April 2013 on behalf of all Kum and Go customers who use wheelchairs or scooters.
A federal court judge on Thursday approved the settlement negotiated by attorneys for the company and the man, Gary McDermott.
It specifies the company will bring 100 stores into compliance within two years and 75 additional stores each year until modifications are made at all stores.
