Georges Niang scored 19 points and Bryce Dejean-Jones had 18 as the 15th-ranked Cyclones downed No. 19 Texas 89-86.
Iowa State put together a 27-12 spurt to go up by 21 with 11:36 left, but the Longhorns got within three before suffering their second straight loss.
Jameel McKay finished with 14 points for the 15-4 Cyclones.

SPENCER — The second-rated (3A) Le Mars Bulldogs scored the final eight points of the game to erase a 39-38 deficit with 2:19 to play to escape an upset bid by Spencer, 46-39, in Lakes Conference boys basketball Tuesday night in Spencer. Caleb Cline put the Bulldogs ahead with 1:55 to play with a shot in the lane and sophomore Trent Hilbrands followed with a pair of layups before Cline canned a pair of free throws to clinch the victory. Spencer rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the game late in the third quarter. Cline hit a half court shot at the buzzer to send the Bulldogs to the final quarter with a 32-29 advantage. Riley Maschino’s three-pointer with 2:19 to play gave Spencer their only lead of the night. That would be the Tigers last points of the game. The Bulldogs’ win coupled with Western Christian’s 61-57 victory over Spirit Lake has put the Dogs back into sole possession of first place in the Lakes Conference with a 9-and-1 record. Le Mars improves to 12-and-2 for the season. Tyler Borchers led Le Mars with 14 points while Caleb Cline and Trent Hilbrands added 11 each. Jake Kluender had 13 for Spencer.
The Le Mars girls turned in a solid performance to win 55-38 at Spencer Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to erase an early 6-2 deficit and led 14-9 by quarter’s end. The lead increased to 17 by halftime and reached 22 points midway through the third quarter. Seniors Holly Schneider and Kassidy Rieken combined for 32 points for Le Mars with Schneider collecting 18 and Rieken had 14. Kelsey Rolfes had 10 for the Lady Tigers. Le Mars improves to 8-and-8 for the season and 6-and-4 in the Lakes Conference.
Le Mars travels to Cherokee Friday night for a Lakes Conference doubleheader that will be carried on KLEM.
LE MARS — Fourth-ranked (1A) Gehlen Catholic had to go to overtime Tuesday night to stay unbeaten with a 78-73 victory over West Sioux at the LeRoy Kellen gym in Le Mars. The Jays improve to 15-and-0 for the season and 8-and-0 in the War Eagle Conference with the win. Gehlen played without leading scorer Alex Kellen but Jarod Steffes picked up the slack, turning in a career-best 19-point performance with Ryan Stoll and Solomon Freking adding 17 each and Lucas Hunt had 11 for the Jays. Isaac Topete led all scorers with 22 points for West Sioux, who falls to 7-and-8 for the season.
The West Sioux girls handed Gehlen Catholic a 55-41 setback Tuesday in War Eagle Conference action. Taylor Rodenburgh had 18 points for the Falcons and Amanda Mace had 16. Carli Murphy led Gehlen Catholic with 18 points. The loss drops the Lady Jays to 5-and-11 for the season and 4-and-4 in the W-E-C. West Sioux improves to 14-and-3.
Gehlen continues War Eagle Conference play Friday in Paullina with a doubleheader against South O’Brien.

CHEROKEE — Senior Holly Schneider literally willed the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs to victory Friday night, scoring eight of her team-high 16 points in the final 3:21 of the game, to rally the Lady Dogs to a 49-46 Lakes Conference victory over Cherokee. The 13th-rated (3A) Braves led for 3 1/2 quarters, once by 11 points early in the third period, before Schneider and her teammates stormed back to take their first lead of the night on a Schneider lay-up with 3:21 to play. Holly had tied the game at 41-all with 4:49 left. Schneider fed a perfect back-cut pass to Sidney Baumgartner for a lay-up with 2:10 left for a 45-41 Le Mars lead. Cherokee scored the next three points to close to within 45-44 with 43 second to go. Schneider put the Lady Bulldogs back up by three with a pair of free throws with 21.6 seconds to play. Kaely Hummel hit a floater off the right base line for Cherokee to trim the difference to 47-46 with 10 seconds to play before Schneider drained two more free throws with 7.2 seconds left to give Le Mars a three-point lead. Hummel then missed a three and also missed a follow up try in the lane as time expired. The Lady Bulldogs won despite missing 16 foul shots. Kassidy Rieken added 11 points for Le Mars while Hummel led all scorers with 21 for Cherokee. Le Mars moves above the .500 mark at 9-and-8 for the first time this season and are 7-and-4 in the Lakes Conference. They’ve gone 9-and-4 since starting the season at 0-and-4. Cherokee slips to 10-and-7 with their second last second loss to Le Mars this season and 6-and-5 in the Lakes Conference.
The Le Mars boys rolled to a 40-point, 72-32 win over winless Cherokee Friday to maintain their one game lead in the Lakes Conference over Western Christian and Spirit Lake with a 10-and-1 conference record. The number-two ranked (3A) Bulldogs are 13-and-2 for the season. It was their second 40-point victory of the season over the Braves. Pete Meis had a career high 17 points to lead Le Mars, Tyler Borchers added 15 and Trent Hilbrands 13. The starters’ night ended after 2 1/2 quarters. Cherokee falls to 0-and-17 for the season and 0-and-11 in league play.
Le Mars travels to Estherville Tuesday to close out a four-game road trip. The doubleheader against E-L-C will be carried on KLEM.
PAULLINA — South O’Brien brought an end to Gehlen Catholic’s unbeaten season Friday night with a 69-54 boys win in Paullina in War Eagle Conference action. The outcome snaps the Jays’ 36-game regular season winning streak dating back to a loss at Paullina that closed out the 2012-2013 regular season. The Wolverines broke free from a tight game with a 26-point fourth quarter. Dallas Jalas and Damon Struve led the way to victory with 27 and 26 points respectively. Solomon Freking had 18 for the Jays, Alex Kellen returned to the line-up after missing Tuesday’s game against West Sioux and scored 14. Lucas Hunt added 10. The Jays fall to 15-and-1 for the season and 8-and-1 in the War Eagle Conference. South O’Brien improves to 14-and-3 for the season and have moved to within one game of the first place Jays in the W-E-C. Hinton is also just a game in back of the Jays with two league games to play.
Seniors Morgan Whitehead, Carli Murphy and Taylor Peters all hit the double digit mark on the score sheet as Gehlen Catholic rallied past South O’Brien 44-41 Friday night. Whitehead led the way with 20, Murphy had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Peters added 11, connecting on three treys. Shelby Schueder paced the Wolverines scoring attack with 12 off the bench. Shay Lund added 11. Gehlen took the lead for good midway through the final quarter. The Lady Jays improve to 6-and-11 for the season and 5-and-4 in the War Eagle Conference. South O’Brien falls to 7-and-11.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)- New England coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady are now four-for-six in Super Bowls in this century. Brady engineered a fourth quarter comeback from 10 points down and hit Julian Edelman with a 3-yard TD with 2:02 left as the Patriots beat defending NFL champion Seattle 28-24 in Super Bowl 49.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – The 37-year-old Tom Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for the third time. Brady completed 37 of 50 passes for 358 yards and four TDs — each to a different receiver — and two interceptions.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – The unheralded hero of Super Bowl 49 was Malcolm Butler, the Patriots rookie strong safety out of West Alabama. As Seattle was on the New England 1-yard line and seemingly poised to score the go-ahead touchdown, Butler spoiled the Seahawks’ bid by stepping in front of Ricardo Lockette for the game-saving interception.
