TUESDAY RESULTS – March 10

DES MOINES — Number-six Le Mars built an 18-point lead right after halftime Tuesday before holding off Dallas Center-Grimes for a 59-51 quarterfinal round victory at the 3A boys State basketball tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Mustangs pulled to within six with a 1:14 to play before Tyler Paulson’s free throws sealed the outcome. Paulson led the Bulldogs with 21 points, hitting 15-of-19 from the foul line on a day when Le Mars went to the line 37 times and connected on 24 of them. Pete Meis added 12 points and Caleb Cline and Tyler Borchers nine each. Austin Rix had 19 points for D-C-G, 14 coming after halftime to lead the Mustangs’ second half charge. Most of Rix’s points came while Tyler Borchers went to the sidelines with his fourth personal foul in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The victory was the 200th career win at Le Mars for coach Dave Irwin. Le Mars takes a 21-and-4 record into the semifinals Thursday night at 6:30 against number-two rated and top-seed Williamsburg, who improved to 24-and-1 with a 65-40 win over Glenwood Tuesday afternoon at ‘The Well’.

THURSDAY RESULTS – March 12

DES MOINES — It took four quarters and two overtimes for number-six Le Mars to prevail in the Class 3A semifinal round in Des Moines Thursday night but the Bulldogs advanced to the State championship game with a 64-57, double overtime victory over number-two Williamsburg at the Wells Fargo Arena. Senior Tyler Borchers overcame three fouls in the first eleven minutes of the game to turn in a monster performance — 35 points and 19 rebounds — to move Le Mars into a Saturday night championship match up with defending champion, number-ten Dubuque Wahlert at 6 o’clock. Pete Meis added 12 points for Le Mars and Tyler Paulson dropped in 10. Adam Klein had 22 to lead the Williamsburg scoring and Zach Schlabaugh had 17. Borchers hit one of two foul shots with 29 seconds to play in regulation to send the game into overtime, tied at 45-all. Borchers again hit one of two foul shot opportunities with 14.7 seconds left in the first overtime to knot the score at 52-52. “T” had seven of the team’s 12 points in the second overtime, including a monster dunk at the buzzer, to seal the deal. Saturday’s State title game will be carried on KLEM starting at 5:55 p.m.

DES MOINES — Defending champion, number-ten Dubuque Wahlert, used a 19-5 third quarter to erase a 16-12 halftime deficit and the Golden Eagles repeated as Class 3A champions, beating number-six Le Mars 46-38 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Saturday night. Wahlert tied the score at 20-all at the 4:31 mark of the third quarter and then ran off 11 straight points and closed the quarter on an 11-1 run to lead 31-21 going into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs trailed 41-30 with 4:18 to play before a 7-0 run narrowed the deficit to four with 1:43 left in the game. That would be as close as Le Mars got as Josh Carter hit 8-of-10 foul shots in the final quarter to keep Wahlert in front to the finish. Carter finished with a game-high 18 points, collecting 16 after halftime. Tyler Borchers had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Le Mars. “T” scored 11 of those 14 points in the final quarter. Borchers was named captain of the All-Tournament team, finishing with 58 points and 29 rebounds for the week-long tournament. Tyler Paulson also landed on the All-Tournament team for Le Mars. Paulson and Pete Meis finished with eight points each Saturday night. Le Mars suffered through their worst shooting night of the season, hitting just 28% of their shots and finishing 0-for-11 from the three-point arch. The Dogs went 1-for-23 from the three-point line over the final two games of the tournament after hitting 35% of their three-point shots coming into the State tournament. Le Mars closed out the season with a record of 22-and-5. Le Mars features the best student body cheering section in Iowa and the State-wide media covering the State tournament this week apparently agreed as Le Mars added the Sportsmanship trophy to their collection of hardware. Seniors Pete Meis and Dayton Rand were also honored with academic honors in Des Moines this week.

INDIANAPOLIS – Top-ranked and unbeaten Kentucky will have the top overall seed for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Wildcats head the Midwest Region, followed by Kansas, Notre Dame and Maryland. Villanova, Virginia, Oklahoma and Louisville lead the East seeds, Duke, Gonzaga, Iowa State and Georgetown top the South, and Wisconsin, Arizona, Baylor and North Carolina have the best four seeds in the West.

SEATTLE (AP) – Iowa has earned the Number 7 seed in the NCAA South Region and will open play against Number 10 seed Davidson. The teams meet Friday in Seattle. Iowa (21-11) reached 20 wins for the third straight season. Senior forward Aaron White led the Hawkeyes in scoring (16 points) and rebounding (7.5). Iowa is making its second straight NCAA trip and its fourth straight postseason appearance overall. Davidson (24-7) made a surprise run to the Atlantic 10 regular-season title under coach Bob McKillop. Led by league player of the year Tyler Kalinoski, the Wildcats were one of the nation’s best 3-point shooting teams and led the nation in assist-to-turnover margin entering the postseason. Davidson is in the NCAAs for the seventh time since 2002, but this is its first at-large bid.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Iowa State has earned the Number 3 seed in the South Region. The two-time Big 12 Tournament champion Cyclones (25-8) will open NCAA Tournament play on Thursday in Louisville against 14th-seeded UAB (19-15). The Cyclones are in the tournament for the fourth straight year under coach Fred Hoiberg. They rallied from 17 points down to beat Kansas in the Big 12 final on Saturday. The Blazers won their first Conference USA Tournament and made it into the bracket for the first time since 2011. Coach Jerod Haase said earning an NCAA Tournament berth is “a rallying cry” for a school that has faced criticism from fans and students for dropping its football program.
NCAA-EAST-WYOMING-NORTHERN IOWA
SEATTLE (AP) – Northern Iowa capped one of its best seasons by getting a Number 5 seed in the East Regional and an opening game against Wyoming in the NCAA Tournament this Friday in Seattle. The Panthers (30-3) tied their school record for victories by beating Illinois State 69-60 for their fourth Missouri Valley Tournament title. They overcame an 18-point deficit to pull it off. Northern Iowa is 3-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to a regional semifinal before losing to Michigan State in 2010 for its best showing. Wyoming (25-9) is in the tournament for the first time since 2002. The Cowboys upset San Diego State 45-43 in the Mountain West Tournament title game to get the automatic berth. They beat Gonzaga in the opening round of the 2002 tournament.
