Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz Visits Pierson
(Pierson) — Republican Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz made a stop in Pierson, Iowa, Friday evening, and spoke to about 200 fellow republicans. The Texas Senator told the gathering the U-S Supreme Court is wrong with its two most recent rulings dealing with the Affordable Care Act and with the same-sex marriage.

State Senator Anderson Endorses Cruz
(Pierson) — Republican State Senator Bill Anderson of Pierson hosted Texas Senator, Ted Cruz at a B-B-Q picnic that featured grilled pork loin sandwiches. About 200 people attended the political rally that was held at the Pierson city park and ball field. While introducing the presidential candidate to the crowd, Anderson made an announcement that many had wondered if it would happen. Anderson proudly proclaimed his support of the Texas Senator, and in front of his supporters, publicly gave his endorsement to Cruz. Anderson says he likes what Cruz stands for on the issues.
Cruz Says U-S Should Trade With Cuba
(Pierson) — Senator Cruz is the son of a Cuban immigrant who was a political prisoner who fled Cuba and settled in the United States. KLEM radio asked the Texas Senator his thoughts about the U-S establishing diplomatic ties with the Caribbean Communist nation. Cruz says the U-S should establish trade relations with Cuba, because he believes it would provide great potential for the U-S. However, he says President Obama is going about it the wrong way.

King Disappointed In Supreme Court Rulings
(Pierson) — Also attending the picnic was Iowa’s 4th District Congressman Steve King. King says the Supreme Court’s decision allowing for same-sex marriages to occur in every state, ranks as one of the worst decisions in the top court’s history. King says it rivals the Wade vs. Roe decision that allowed for abortions to be legal. The Iowa Congressman believes two of the justices should have excused themselves from the case.

Hibbit Sports Coming To Le Mars
(Le Mars) — A sporting goods store is coming to Le Mars. The Hibbit Sports store is scheduled to open in late July at 1319 Holton Drive, near the Walmart Supercenter. Hibbitt Sports and its subsidiaries operate more than 1,000 premium athletic retail stores in small to mid-sized markets, predominantly in the South, Southwest, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions. The company’s primary retail format is a 5,000 square foot store in strip center and enclosed malls. Founded in 1945, Hibbett offers a large selection of athletic equipment, footwear, and apparel, with an expansive selection of brand name merchandise.
Vander Platts Comments On Supreme Court’s Same-sex Marriage Ruling
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Christian conservative Bob Vander Plaats, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, says the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion creates a constitutional crisis.
Vander Plaats says the Constitution “was trampled on by activist judges who went way outside of their scope of jurisdiction and defied the laws of nature and nature’s God and it’s going to have severe ripple effects throughout this country.”
He says he’s more optimistic about the institution of marriage today than ever before because he believes the court’s decision will serve as a wakeup call for the church. He says the country knows right from wrong and “what this court did today was exceptionally wrong and they know that marriage simply means the institution of one man and one woman.”
He says it’s a matter of time before “we right the ship.”
Drake Law Professor Comments On Supreme Court Ruling On Same-sex Marriage
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Drake University constitutional law professor Mark Kende says the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision is broad in finding same-sex marriage bans violate the U.S. Constitution’s equal protection clause and due process rights of citizens.
Kende says Friday the majority ruling of the court in the 5-4 decision “emphasizes the strength with which the majority wants to send the signal that this is to be taken very seriously and has some historic significance.”
Kende says the 2009 Iowa Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, similar to the national high court’s, was a catalyst for the nation “and opened the door to the idea that this could be mainstream America.”
He says the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion vindicates the Iowa court’s foresight. The unanimous ruling by the seven-member Iowa court in 2009 made Iowa the third state to legalize same-sex marriage.
Iowa Still Ranks Number 1 In Hog Production
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The latest report on the status of the Iowa hog industry shows the state with 21 million hogs on Iowa farms as of June 1.
That’s the second highest number ever since records began in 1870. The highest figure was December 2014 when the state had 21.3 million hogs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which released the report Friday, says the latest figure is a 10 percent increase over the inventory of a year ago.
Iowa is the nation’s leading pork producer by far. The figures show Minnesota is second with just over 8 million hogs and North Carolina is right at 8 million. Illinois had 4.6 million, Nebraska 3.2 million and Missouri 2.9 million.
The national inventory is 66.9 million head.
