Sunday afternoon accident (Fatal Victim Identified)

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County authorities have released the name of the fatal accident that happened Sunday afternoon on Highway 75, four miles north of Le Mars.  The accident victim has been identified as 16 year old Zachary Rolfes of Le Mars.  Rolfes crossed the centerline, and was hit by a semi truck and trailer.  He was pronounced dead at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.  The driver of the semi truck, 43 year old Jon Edwards of Sibley suffered only minor injuries.

 

(Le Mars) — A 16 year old Le Mars male driver was killed from a two vehicle accident involving a semi truck and trailer and a passenger vehicle that happened Sunday afternoon on Highway 75 North, at approximately 130th Street, or about four miles north of Le Mars.  The accident shut down the highway from both directions for a period of about two hours.  The accident happened at about 3:50 p.m.  The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the accident.  It appears the passenger vehicle had crossed over the centerline, then tried to get back on his side of the road when the collision occurred.  Preliminary information indicates that a 1992 Honda Accord was northbound on Highway 75.  The driver of the Honda swerved into the southbound lane of traffic and was struck by the semi.  The driver of the semi truck, identified as 43 year old Jon Edwards of Sibley suffered only minor injuries.  The driver of the Honda Accord is identified as a 16 year old male from Le Mars.  The driver of the Honda car was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at Floyd Valley Hospital. The name of the 16 year old boy is being withheld pending notification of family members.   Responding to the accident were the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department, Le Mars Ambulance, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, Le Mars Police, Iowa State Highway Patrol, and the Iowa Department of Transportation.  A detour has been set up directing traffic away from the scene.
