Fire Department Responds To Smoke In Downtown Apartment
(Le Mars) — On Saturday evening, September 5th at about 7:50pm the Le Mars Fire-Rescue Department was called to 36 ½ Central Ave. N.E. for a report of smoke on the second floor of the downtown building. The building is owned by John Koley of Le Mars. Upon arrival firefighters encountered smoke in the upstairs second floor hallway. Firefighters made entry and removed a person from Apartment #4 and two people from Apartment #1. All three people were checked by the Le Mars Ambulance and released. Firefighters found food on fire in an oven in apartment #4. Apartment #4 was occupied by Doug Blackmore. Firefighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the building and allowed the residents back into the structure. Firefighters were on scene for approximately 30 minutes. The incident attracted a crowd of spectators watching the event.
Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Le Mars Police Department, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, Orange City Fire Department.
Northey To Speak At Farm Bureau Annual Meeting
(Des Moines) — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey will be visiting Ida, O’Brien, and Plymouth Counties on Tuesday, September 8th. Northey will make an appearance in Le Mars Tuesday evening as he will address the Plymouth County Farm Bureau annual meeting. Northey will speak at 7:00 p.m. The Plymouth County Farm Bureau annual meeting will be held in Century Hall at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds.
Munoz-Perez Found Dead In Vehicle
(Sioux City) — Sioux City Police has issued a news release indicating Raquel Munoz-Perez was found dead inside her vehicle, in Sioux City. You may recall, Munoz-Perez was listed as missing on August 18th. She had left her residence on 13th Street in Sioux City at 6:30 a.m. on her way to work at the Cloverleaf Cold Storage, but did not arrive. She was driving a White 2000 four door Chevy Cavalier. Munoz-Perez had just purchased the vehicle and did not have state issued license plates, but instead the car had temporary tags from the place of purchase, River Auto dealership. The news release does not indicate if foul play is suspected, or how Munoz-Perez may have died. It also fails to mention where the vehicle was found.
Sioux City Officials Trying To Deal With Homelessness
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Some Sioux City leaders are working to address a growing number of homeless people living and panhandling on the northwestern Iowa city’s streets.
Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young says the rise of homelessness, panhandling and public intoxication has caused growing concern among businesses, police and city government.
Police Capt. Lisa Claeys is working with organizations such as Downtown Partners Sioux City in hopes of creating a panel of business owners to work on the issue of homelessness in town.
Claeys says she hopes business owners, community resources and agencies such as the Warming Shelter, Siouxland Soup Kitchen and Gospel Mission can organize to help the homeless.
Sutherland Holds Groundbreaking For New City Hall And Community Building
SUTHERLAND, Iowa (AP) – Ground has been broken on a new community center, American Legion post and City Hall in Sutherland.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday, on what would have been the 102nd birthday of Ray Johanssen. Johanssen left the bulk of the $1.8 million garnered from the sale of his land to the city upon his death in 2013, stipulating that the money go toward the community center.
The 9,000 square-foot facility will house a community center, American Legion Post Number 152, Sutherland City Hall, a kitchen, a bar and more. It will be located on a corner lot on the west side of downtown.
Excavation of the site is set to begin September 21st.
School Board Elections Scheduled For Tuesday
(Le Mars) — Tuesday is the date for school board elections. Here at Le Mars, three people are vying for two positions at the At-large district positions. They include Angela Catton, Mark Hemmingson, and Patrick Murphy. You can visit the KLEM website at www.klem1410.com to listen to the comments from all three candidates. Fred Zenk is running unopposed in district 5. District 3 is also up for election, however, there were no candidates that stepped up indicating an interest in running from district 3. It is open to have a write-in candidate.
