COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cardale Jones started Ohio State’s season opener and was a double threat as the top-ranked Buckeyes opened their championship defense with a 42-24 win at Virginia Tech. Jones threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns, and he also carried 13 times for 99 yards and a score. Receiver Braxton Miller also had a productive night, scoring on a 53-yard run and grabbing a 54-yard scoring pass from Jones.

(SIOUX CITY) — Noah Perio’s two-run double in the third inning put the Sioux City Explorers up by a 3-2 margin and Rob Wort’s relief performance made the lead hold up as the X’s took a 1-0 lead in the American Association playoffs with a 3-2 win over the St. Paul Saints Wednesday night at Lewis and Clark Park. Wort retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced in the game to make the one-run lead stand.

Brady completed 19 consecutive passes and finished 25 of 32 for 288 yards, including three scoring strikes to Rob Gronkowski. Scott Chandler had a TD reception that put the Pats ahead 21-3 early in the second half.

(SIOUX CITY) — The Sioux City Explorers took a commanding 2-0 lead in the American Association playoffs over the St. Paul Saints with a 12-1 rout in Game Two of their best-of-five series. The X’s erupted for six runs in the third inning to forge an early 8-1 lead and never looked back. Patrick Johnson, who finished 15-and-1 in the regular season, threw a one-hitter to earn the win. Sioux City had 16 hits, led by Michael Lang’s four and Matt Koch’s three. Friday is a day of travel as the series switches to St. Paul for Saturday’s Game Three.

(STORM LAKE) — Eric Broich ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns to lead Storm Lake to a 31-14 win over Le Mars Friday night in Storm Lake. The Tornados rolled up 464 yards of offense with 318 coming on the ground to offset 16 penalties for 145 yards and three turnovers. Storm Lake built a 10-0 lead on a four yard run by Josh Werge and a 29-yard field goal by Eugenio Rosiles before a flurry of points in the final 1:30 of the first half left the Tornados with a 17-14 lead at halftime. Back-up quarterback Gabe Eckstaine, pressed into service when starter Koster Buss left the game with a rib injury late in the first half, ran three yards for the first Bulldog score with 1:30 to play in the half to narrow the Storm Lake lead to 10-6. The Tornados responded with a five yard touchdown run by Eric Broich with 37-seconds to play in the half for a 17-6 lead. Helped by three personal foul penalties, Le Mars went 60 yards in the final 33 seconds of the half to score on a 30-yard Eckstaine-to-Devin Louison TD pass on the final play of the half. Eckstaine threw a two-point conversion pass to Keaton Candor to cut the margin to three at the break. The second half belonged to Storm Lake though as Lamar Mulgae ran 26 yards for a third quarter touchdown and Broich tallied again from two yards away with 32 seconds to play in the game. The Bulldogs threw for 207 yards but managed just 62 yards on the ground. Le Mars falls to 0-and-3 and 0-and-1 in district play heading into next Friday’s homecoming game with Sioux Center. It will be the final non-district game of the season for the Dogs.
(LE MARS) — Number-seven South O’Brien kept the Gehlen Catholic Jays still searching for a win after three weeks of the 2015 season with a 21-9 district win Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field. Damon Struve ran for 137 yards to lead the Wolverines and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 79 yard run. Karter Rohrbaugh’s eight-yard run midway through the second quarter made it 14-0 at halftime. Gehlen scored their first offensive touchdown of the season on a 45-yard run by Roman Freking on the first play of the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit to 14-7 with 11:48 to play. Sam Nelson extended South O’Brien’s lead to 21-7 with a four yard run with 6:46 to play before the Jays tallied a safety with 1:33 left. Freking finished with 187 yards on 23 carries for Gehlen to lead a 226-yard rushing attack. The Jays travel to Akron-Westfield next Friday in a game that will be carried on KLEM.

PAUL, MIN.) — Storm Lake native Eric Wordekemper, Rob Wort and Jose Flores combined to pitch the Sioux City Explorers to a 2-1 victory over St. Paul Sunday night, moving the X’s into the championship series with a three games-to-one win over the Saints in the American Association playoffs.. Sioux City plated both runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Rene Tosoni and Noah Perio but the Explorers’ defense came up with several clutch plays to preserve the lead and secure the victory. Sioux City begins the championship series Wednesday and Thursday at either Wichita or Laredo. The Lemurs and Wingnuts play a fifth and deciding game Monday in Laredo to decide who will take on the Explorers for the American Association title.
